Arrest of three hardcore and high ranking NDFB (S) cadres wanted by NIA and conferring of National Gallantry Award (Shaurya Chakra) by President of India

In a swift and successful operation based on reliable information, the Kohima District Police under the personal supervision of SSP Kohima, a team led by SDPO Kohima comprising of personnel of DEF Kohima and Mobile Unit conducted a search and counter insurgency operation on 14th Jan’ 2015, and apprehended 3 suspect from a private house from the outskirt of Kohima Town. On verification the 3 suspect were identified as active members of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) Songbijit faction, who were taking shelter in Kohima. They are (1) SS Eastern Commander of 3rd Bn of NDFB(S) Ojoi Basumatary @ Buhum 32 years, S/o Lt. Bolen, Vill: Baora Tonder, PO: Halam Bazaar, PS: Kokrajhar, Dist: Kokrajhar Assam (2) SS Secretary Forest and Council Member of NDFB(S) Dilip Basumatary @ Bir Baisa 40 years, S/o Jotin, Vill: Benthol, PO: Benthol, PS: Basugaon, Dist: Chirang Assam and (3) SS Southern Deputy Commander of NDFB(S) Khamrei @ Urla 35 years, S/o Jotin, Vill: Benthol,PO: Benthol, PS: Basugaon, Dist: Chirang Assam who are the prime accused in the December massacre of 81 Adivasi Tribals in Kokrajhar and Chirang district of Assam.
During the preliminary investigation it was learnt that, with the relentless pressure of the Assam Police and the Army conducting operation following the December Bloodbath, the three hardcore militants had found it no longer safe to remain in Assam and had sneaked into the State Capital Kohima, Nagaland via Dimapur, Nagaland and had successfully concealed their presence till they were arrested. The cadres were next planning to escape to Myanmar to evade all Indian State and Federal security and Police agencies that were in hot pursuit. With the arrest the attempt to escape to Myanmar has been foiled.
During the raid 7(seven) nos of mobile phones, two copies of Martyr Speech of interim President I.K Songbijit which was delivered on the occasion of Martyr’s day of NDFB(S) on 14/09/2014, one diary containing details of cash transactions were seized from their possession. All the three NDFB(S) cadres referred above were accordingly handed over to the team of NIA Guwahati after observing all legal formalities and obtaining a transit warrant from the Hon’ble Court of CJM kohima on 15/01/2015.
The timely execution of action under an able officer Shri Atu Zumvü,NPS (SDPO) to the extent of risking his life have successfully arrested them leading to recovery of documents otherwise would have sneaked to Myanmar. Had they not been arrested there was high chances of escaping to Myanmar and law and order situation in the North East particularly in the state of Assam would have accelerated unprecedentedly. After completing all legal formalities the arrested persons were handed over to NIA at Guwahati, Assam as the Union Home Ministry has asked the NIA to probe the killings that had sent shock waves across the Country. The exhibition of exceptional bravery by the officer is a big achievement and brought laurels to Nagaland Police and was commended by one and all including Governor and Chief Minister of Nagaland. The officer has been decorated with the Shaurya Chakra by the Government of India on the occasion of Independence Day 2016 for his valour, courageous action and self sacrifice. Shaurya Chakra is the peacetime equivalent of the Vir Chakra and is generally awarded for counter insurgency operations and actions against the enemy during peacetime. It is third in order of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra. With this, the officer becomes the first recipient of the Shaurya Chakra in Nagaland Police after statehood and is granted a monthly stipend of Rs. 3000/-with effective date from the date of arrest i.e 14/01/2015 and other facilities like 2(two) railway complimentary pass (AC I-II Tier) from Indian Railways, Income Tax Exemption Certificate from Ministry of Finance, Toll Tax Exemption Certificate from Ministry of Transport, one landline telephone without rental charge from the MTNL.

Besides this, a cash of Rs. 80,000/- or plot of land is being given to the awardee by the State Government as per the instruction of the Central Government.
